On the show Girls and Oberlin

I have never watched the show Girls. I can’t bring myself to waste my time on it. I’ve read numerous articles about it. And I have to say this:

As an Oberlin student and woman of color I completely understand how Dunham came up with this show.  I also understand how in Dunham’s New York there are less than 10 people of color. This is not sarcasm. Read on. At Oberlin students of color are in the minority. I’d guess the population of POCs in around 10%. (Apparently that makes us so diverse as a college.) The truth is the college is mostly white women who only hang out with other white women and white men. It’s not because they’re racist, although there are a few racists running around campus. It’s because for a lot of them whiteness is literally all they know. I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard “Oh I have this one black friend back home” or to my utter disbelief “You’re my first black friend.”
